A small drone flying low crashed onto the White House grounds before dawn Monday. But What Was Behind The Whitehouse Drone Crash?
It is being suggested that it will give the Government grounds to ban or restrict these so very useful machines.
Whatever was behind this event, whether it was just an innocent flight that went wrong or something more sinister, it does raise security issues for the US Government and for any other governments around the globe.
With reports of drugs being flown over prison walls it is bound to raise concerns about just what these technically advanced ‘toys’ are capable of!
GPS is one of the most impressive features of modern Quadcopters and Multirotor flyers. It is already implemented to ensure that a Quadcopter cannot, under normal circumstances at least, get lost.
They are already often equipped with a feature that would cause them to Return Home at the flick of a switch. It isn’t beyond the realms of reality to imagine that this technology could quite easily be utilized to prevent a quadcopter from taking off in a designated ‘No Fly Zone’. Or once airborne to force it to Return Home if it encounters such an area whilst in flight.
Such a feature would certainly set a lot minds at ease. In fact Quadcopter maker DJI is already planning a software update to prevent its drones from flying in downtown D.C.
Are these Quadcopters a real and genuine security threat? There are videos showing Quadcopters carrying and firing automatic weapons. These are all believed to be hoaxes. Apart from the load carrying capacity of small Quadcopters the recoil from such a weapon would make accurate targeting difficult, to say the least.
But other smaller payloads are a possibility as Quadcopters can carry a payload of around half their weight. Drugs have been carried over borders and prison walls with varying success. Some have been intercepted but how many more have made it through unhindered?
Shooting them down, particularly in an urban environment, is fraught with difficulties. The collateral damage to person and property doesn’t bear thinking about, so other means will need to be developed. Rubber pellets and even string are being trialed.
Whatever was behind the Whitehouse Drone Crash it, and along the recent incident where an intruder was apprehended in the Whitehouse grounds, has certainly caused the government to revisit Whitehouse security. If, what appears to be an innocent, although misguided, Quadcopter flight can get that close to such an important and sensitive building, so easily, might not something more dangerous also put everyone there in danger? What defense is there from these otherwise harmless machines?
