So Who Was Flying The Whitehouse Drone?

So just who was flying the Whitehouse Drone? Was it an inebriated employee as has been officially stated – or was something more sinister behind it? Most reports suggest that it was nothing than an employee, who should have known this wasn’t the place to fly his quadcopter, testing out his new gadget. But whatever the reason for it being flown within the Whitehouse grounds it has certainly ruffled a few feather amongst the Whitehouse security staff.

It has also been suggested that this is nothing more that a cynical scheme by The President to force restrictions on the sale and use of these otherwise useful devices. DJI have, in fact, stated that they will upgrade the firmware in all of their models to prevent them from being flown over or near sensitive sites such as government building and airports etc.

But whoever it was Who Was Flying The Whitehouse Drone has certainly brought drones and quadcopters to the attention of the general public – in a big way!

DJI Phantom 2 Quadcopter

Who Was Flying The Whitehouse DroneThe ‘drone’ involved in this incident appears to have been a standard DJI Phantom 2 Quadcopter. These ‘off-the-shelf’ flying machines are often equipped with a video camera, most often a GoPro model. The quality of the video and still images they are capable of capturing is quite breath-taking in their clarity and sharpness of details. So this could, obviously, be of immense concern to the Security Services here and elsewhere.

From the image made available this particular DJI Phantom 2 Quadcopter appears to have no camera attached. It is possible that it was removed before the photo was taken, although the debris that is lying around it does suggest it hadn’t been disturbed before the photo was shot.

So this does tend to lend weight to the argument that this was simply a recreational flight and nothing more. A very misguided and misjudged flight though none the less!

Government mapping worker blamed for White House drone …

The person operating the drone that crashed on the White House grounds called the U.S. Secret Service to “self-report” their involvement in the incident. No doubt this particular flight will not be repeated, certainly not by the individual involved in controlling, if that’s the correct word, this DJI Phantom 2 Quadcopter. It will, however, raise many questions. Why was it being flown there, was it authorized and if so by whom?

The general consensus is that this was nothing more sinister that a drunken employee who should known better trying out his new ‘toy’. But even now the conspiracy theorists are gearing up with suggestions that it is a Government ploy to force severe restrictions on these so very useful devices.

Apart from their recreational benefits they are being used to deliver medicines and other vital supplies to outlying areas in some parts of the world. Getting supplies and doing reconnaissance in emergency situations at home could become of great benefit in the future It would be a shame if this isolated incident causes such future developments to be curtailed.
