On assignment in the Bahamas with a Phantom 2 Vision+

I’m back from an awesome 8 days scuba diving and flying the Bahamas for Bahamas Underwater Photo Week, a collaboration between Alert Diver Magazine, Bahamas Diving Association, and Bahamas Ministry of Tourism. In total, there were 4 photographers, 2 social media journalists, and a filmmaker covering the various parts of the Bahamas. I was responsible for New Providence and N. Eleuthera and was hosted by Stuart Cove and Valentines Dive Shop.

In total, I probably flew at least 20 batteries worth of flights (about 5 hours of flight time), and the Vision+ performed flawlessly, even launched from boats in winds of around 15 MPH. I shot a lot of video from moving boats at 15 knots+. If you are doing this, be sure you use Phantom Assistant to set your maximum range to something very large (I sent mine to 9999 meters). Phantoms measure range from home point, and if the quadcopter hits maximum range, it will be like it hit a wall (it will just stop and hover). This happened the first time I flew from a boat during this trip—my max range was set to 1500m (just under a mile), which we surpassed in only a few minutes.

Equipment used in coverage: Olympus E-M1, Nauticam underwater housing, Sea & Sea DS-1 strobes, Really Right Stuff tripod, DJI Phantom 2 Vision+ quadcopter and integrated stabilized camera.
